5 Smells that Mean Trouble for Your Car

Even with all the computers that modern cars are equipped with in order to let drivers know about potential or actual problems there are some issues that are better detected by human sense. Your nose can tell you a lot about the way your car is running! If your nose takes in any of these aromas while cruising down the street you'll want to make an appointment with your local repair shop, as these smells mean trouble.

Maple Syrup Smell

The sweet smell of maple is similar to the smell of antifreeze, the fluid used in the cooling system. If your car springs a coolant leak you'll likely start craving pancakes, but be sure to clean up the spill, as this fluid is very attractive to animals, yet extremely poisonous. Of course, you also will want to make an appointment with your auto shop to avoid overheating issues.

Campfire Smell

With summer just around the corner that burning clutch may give you the idea of going camping. Don't be fooled into thinking you're daydreaming, this smell really means you need a clutch repair or replacement.

Dirty Laundry Smell

Another issue you may encounter as we head into the warmer months of the PNW is the smell of dirty socks that occurs when you crank up the AC for the first time of the season. This is often caused by mildew or mold growth in the AC system and heater and can be resolved by turning the heater up full blast for several minutes.

Burning Oil Smell

This one is pretty straight forward. Oil has a fairly distinct smell when it burns, and this problem will often be accompanied by blue exhaust smoke. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with right away to avoid any issues of metal on metal friction within the engine.

Gas Station Stench

The smell of gasoline is also pretty well known. If your car starts to smell like a gas station there is a chance you have a fuel leak. More likely though there is a problem with the gas cap, and it is allowing gasoline to evaporate out of the filler hose.

However you detect problems in your car it is important to have them resolved to avoid larger issues down the road. Anytime you smell something funny make an appointment at O.N.B.
